For the budget traveler who loves to eat, Melbourne is a favorite hot spot. Eating here is economical, affordable and enjoyable given the fact that Melbourne has so many cuisines and culinary delights to offer. Service might be biased towards those customers who are paying about 10% of the bill as tip, although tipping is not compulsory. It is advised to tip the waiter in advance at high end restaurants if you desire perfect service, otherwise you might have to contend with some pretty ordinary and cold service.
African cuisine can be found at the Racecourse road, which has a high concentration of African people and cafes. African food is meant to be eaten with hands, and it can be messy at times, although its fun!

In many bayside areas you may encounter a special modern Australian dish- fish and chips, which are very similar to those found in the UK. Although contemporary Australian cuisine doesn't exist in practice, yet it exists in essence and is a mixture of many naïve dishes taken from different cultures and modified according to the Australian tastes.
St. Kilda, a suburb in Melbourne is famous for café style and deli style servings. There are numerous small cafes serving steaming hot coffee along with club sandwiches. You may even opt for a cold frappe on the rocks, accompanied with a heart and mouth filling snack.
Suburbs of Richmond and the Chinatown area in Bourke street is famous for its Chinese food, and its really good here, thanks to the abundance of Chinese migratory population that stays in this area. Most of the Chinese culinary items here are from the Cantonian menu list, and eating the Dim Sum, a sort of Chinese brunch is a popular activity among most Australians, no matter what culture they belong to.
In the Hawthorn area and along the Richmond street, where most of the Asian migratory population lives, one can come across many Indian cafe's serving samosas and curries, with masala chai or Tea. Other Indian and Nepalese curry houses are in abundance here, and offer cheap, but scrumptious curries. But because major part of the population in Australia doesn't like spicy curries much, these cafes and eateries ad frequented mostly by their native eaters.
Greek and Italian food are also served here at the North cot and the Melbourne central, with Spiga and Mien Lei be being the most famous Italian restaurants here. Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese food is also served around the St. Fitzroy and CBD areas.
